Weapons Training (Kobudo)

At Kaizen Karate & Martial Arts, our Weapons Program (Kobudo) builds on the foundation of strong body mechanics, focus, and control developed through Kenpo Karate.

Kobudo means “the old martial way” and refers to the study of traditional Okinawan and Japanese weapons. These ancient arts were originally developed from everyday tools — a reminder that skill, discipline, and awareness matter more than the weapon itself.

What We Teach

Weapons instruction begins once students reach the green belt level. By this stage, students have developed enough body control and awareness to handle weapons safely and with precision.

This approach ensures both safety and readiness so students get the most out of their training.

Our weapons curriculum includes:

  • Bo (staff): The first and most foundational weapon we teach. Training with the bo develops balance, reach, coordination, and flow.
  • Sai: Metal tridents used for trapping and redirecting attacks, strengthening the wrists and improving precision.
  • Kama: Short-handled sickles that emphasize control, accuracy, and awareness of range.
  • Tonfa: Side-handled batons that build forearm strength and teach rotational power and defense.

As with karate, weapons training focuses on progressive skill development, each technique building on what came before, andeach student moving at their own pace.

We are honored to have trained with one of the great modern masters of the bo, Professor Rocky DiRico, whose instruction and mentorship deeply influence how we teach today.

Why We Teach Kobudo

Weapons training helps students deepen their understanding of body mechanics, timing, and focus. It challenges coordination and concentration in new ways, while teaching respect for both the art and the tools.

Students gain:

  • Enhanced coordination and control
  • Deeper focus and discipline
  • Improved strength, balance, and precision
  • A sense of connection to centuries of martial tradition

Kobudo is an important part of the Kaizen philosophy, continuous improvement through mindful practice and steady progress.

Fitness, Focus, and Community

Our weapons program is taught with the same inclusive and supportive spirit as all our classes. Students of all backgrounds and abilities are welcome, and instruction is adapted to each person’s comfort level and experience.

Training in weapons isn’t about aggression. It’s about respect, focus, and mastery of self.

Each practice is a reminder that the true goal of martial arts is not to control others, but to control yourself.
